Thank you CHLA for all the love and care you have given Alessio!
Welcome to TEAM ALESSIO's Walk L.A. page! We are excited to be part of the inaugural Walk L.A. in support of the mission of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. They have done so much for Alessio, that our team is committed to raising at least $10,000 for Children's Hospital Los Angeles in partnership with the event.
In one week, our family was filled with joy and fear. On September 10, 2016 the wait was over, our second son and Massimo’s little brother, Alessio was born. The anticipation of his arrival was huge, especially for his big brother Massimo. For 9 months he would ask, “papa…is Alessio my brother?”, “papa, what does Alessio look like?” “papa, does Alessio like ice cream?”. After 24 hours being born, Alessio passed all the newborn baby health checks. He was good to go home and Massimo’s questions would finally be answered!
The day joy turned to fear. Out from nowhere while feeding Alessio at home he had lost consciousness and turned completely blue. It was a Monday afternoon, Alessio only 9 days old was rushed to our community hospital ER and NICCU, where doctors were baffled as to what could be wrong. After one month without diagnosis and slow decline in health he was brought to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). From the moment he arrived until he was finally diagnosed, CHLA doctor’s from every specialty reviewed his case. The drive to diagnose Alessio was incredible. At times, doctor’s would visit with him at Midnight. After two weeks at CHLA Alessio was diagnosed with Pulmonary Alveolar Proteinosis, a life threatening rare lung disease fewer than 100 people have in the US. Not much is known about this rare disease, but the doctor's at CHLA worked hard and collaborated with doctors all over the world to find a treatment that would work on Alessio. After seven months in the hospital, finally finding a treatment to manage the disease, he was able to go home once again. He's still on oxygen and requires constant care while continuing his treatments at CHLA. Our hope is that someday his disease goes into remission.
Sharing Alessio’s story is incredibly important. Without the dedication, talent and determination of the entire CHLA team our son would not be home and with his big brother. More children receive care from CHLA than any other hospital in the region—and often CHLA comes to the rescue for children when other hospitals run out of medical options for their care. Walk LA is the walk that supports the only hospital solely dedicated to the health of children in Los Angeles.
