One of the hardest parts about spending 6 months in Children’s Hospital while our newborn daughter Shae fought for her life, was every moment we could not be in the room to hold her. Harder still, was the idea of all the hundreds of other children who were too sick to get out of bed, and too young to talk, and did not have anyone by their side to hold them.
We all know the power of touch, and the importance of physical connection for a growing infant, let alone the desperate need for children struggling with life threatening medical issues.
The greatest joy in our journey, was when I walked into the room where Shae was alone and found her being gently held by a qualified volunteer, during a brief period that I couldn’t be there myself.
The staff at Children’s Hospital is wonderful, but there just aren’t enough nurses and caretakers available to meet the needs of countless children with parents who are working, single, have other siblings with daily needs, or just aren’t in the picture.
That’s why we’re launching the Koala Corps.
Koala Corps is an initiative to get every baby held in CHLA that has no one to hold them. At Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Volunteers actually are available, but they do not have enough funding to hire a full time program administrator to run the program. That's where we come in.
Children's Hospital is a miraculous institutions that saves lives every day. We don’t always get to see directly what happens with our donations to most charities. With the Koala Corps, we can see the specific impact that our dollars are making in a way that matters most.
That's where you come in. By joining us in sponsoring the Walk and Play Fundraiser for Children's Hospital Los Angeles on June 2nd and sponsoring our team, your donation will go directly into the Koala Corps fund.
Once we raise the necessary funds ($300,000), Children's Hospital will immediately hire a program director and launch the initiative, knowing that there are sufficient funds to run the program for three years. Then they can finally realize the untapped blessings of volunteers across Southern California giving love to children in need, right here in our community.
How you can get involved: Donate tour Page to help us reach our fundraising goal ($30,000 - 10% of the total needed). Or - Join the Walk and create your own fundraising page for Walk and Play L.A., designating Koala Corps for all funds raise to be directed!
I know we all get so busy, but this mission is the greatest way to make the biggest difference in the lives of children who cannot advocate for themselves - arms to hold them and give them love.
